Kevin Coy

Company Director, Broadcaster & Editor

Radio

ImageKevin has been a freelance radio presenter for nearly 10 years, and has had extensive involvement in mainstream commercial radio, BBC local radio, digital radio and on several RSL broadcasts around the United Kingdom.

Kevin was a senior editor and broadcaster for the UK's leading traffic and travel news provider, Trafficlink UK, based in their Birmingham offices.  This entailed providing accurate travel information for leading clients such as the BBC, and commercial radio including Global Radio, UTV Radio, CN Radio, and Traffic Radio.  Kevin was regularly heard daily on BBC Local Radio across the United Kingdom.

Kevin also records and produces reports and bulletins focusing on the global economy and financial markets, world politics and in-depth analysis of world events, alongside reports and analysis of the UK political landscape.  Kevin's reports in this area have been broadcast both nationally and internationally.

Since 2003, and the wider availability of broadband to the consumer, Kevin has been heavily involved with broadcasting via the internet, including holding extensive conferences with royalty collection societies in the UK in order to make broadcasting online a viable business opportunity.  Since the commencement of these conferences, royalty rates for broadcasting online have decreased dramatically, to a point where it is now affordable for internet-only broadcasters to survive financially.  Kevin worked directly with PPL UK Ltd to develop the first cost-effective blanket licence for broadcasting online, whereby PPL licenced a third-party to then licence small webcasters.  During this same period, Kevin worked closely with MCPS/PRS Alliance to develop a similar licence.

Kevin's first business developed streaming technologies which both satisfied the requirements of small webcasters, whilst also providing the high level of detail required by the royalty societies automatically, and without the need of the webcaster to have to spend countless hours collating the information.  Kevin used the blanket licence which he worked with PPL UK Ltd to develop, to provide royalty coverage for the small webcasters using the exclusive distribution systems which were utilised.

As Managing Director of Sixhits Digital Radio Ltd, Kevin was leading the drive to launch the service onto a local DAB Digital Radio multiplex, having obtained a DSPS licence from Ofcom to enable digital transmissions, and entering into negotiations with both GCAP Media, and MuxCo, the two major multiplex operators in the UK.  During his tenure at Sixhits, Kevin was involved with developing new methods of streaming via IP (the internet) including P2P streaming, making Sixhits the first full-time broadcaster to use the EBU-favoured, Octoshape streaming platform.  Kevin spent 14 months as Managing Director of the company, before leaving to pursue other projects.

Kevin provides consultation services to hospital radio, community radio, local commercial radio and online radio broadcasters in the fields of streaming technologies, music licensing and all legal aspects of broadcasting radio services via the internet, including integration and revenue generation.  As with Sixhits Digital Radio Ltd, Kevin actively promotes the use of peer streaming technologies, a system which cuts the costs of broadcasting to a wider audience.  Through Kevin's role at News on News Limited, he provides dedicated streaming server CDN's, and remote playout systems, cost effectively, to new and established broadcasters looking to further utilise the internet in their broadcasting business.

Kevin also produces regular podcasts for the News on News network of media websites.
